Audi Kills Off R8 e-tron After Selling 'Fewer Than 100'

Audi has stopped production of the R8 e-tron having sold fewer than 100 examples of the all-electric sports car.

The German marque unveiled the model in production-spec at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, based around the second-generation R8. Its debut came six years after being first previewed in concept form and on paper, it seemed a promising prospect, adding a new dimension to the R8 range.

Unfortunately for Audi, the R8 e-tron never proved popular and according to Car and Driver, only double digit sales figures were recorded.

An Audi representative confirmed the news saying that "fewer than 100" were sold. The vehicle's sky-high 1 million euro ($1.1 million) price tag is a likely reason for why the electric model never appealed to many buyers.

When launched, the R8 e-tron utilized two rear-mounted electric motors delivering a total of 456 hp and 679 lb-ft of torque. That power was transmitted to the rear wheels courtesy of a single-speed transmission, allowing the model to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds and a 250 km/h (155 mph) top speed.
