BMW Chief Says Electric Vehicle Race 'Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint'

#BMW chief executive Harald Krueger believes that the ongoing electric car race is a marathon and not a sprint.

Krueger made the statement while speaking with Bloomberg at an event in California celebrating the German marque's centenary. According to the chief, it will take time for the electric vehicle movement to grow and for such vehicles to become commonplace.

“It's a marathon and not a sprint. With a marathon you know if you [will] win or lose later on, somewhere at kilometer 30 for example. You need some time for this movement and development but as nothing which will go away and it's clearly one important strategic pillar of the BMW Group to invest in to electrification,” he said.

The marque recently set itself the ambitious goal of having 1 million electric vehicles on the market by the year 2020. The most important electric vehicle for BMW is thought to be an impending variation of the next-generation 3-Series.

The new model will be based around the firm's CLAR platform and is expected to receive a 90 kWh battery pack, giving the model a range of about 300 miles (482 km). It would therefore prove as the perfect competitor for the Tesla Model 3.
