Lamborghini Creates Fourth Super Trofeo For The Middle East

Lamborghini may not have the kind of background in motor racing some of its rivals do, but that hasn't stopped the Super Trofeo from expanding into a worldwide success for the Italian supercar manufacturer. In fact, it's been such a success that the company is launching a fourth regional championship, this time in the Middle East.

Now eight years running, the Super Trofeo encompasses individual series in Europe, Asia, and North America. The new Middle Eastern championship will follow a similar format, only much shorter. The inaugural calendar will include three rounds – each of them a double-header, all held in the United Arab Emirates.

The first round is scheduled to kick off on February 9-11 on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, with the subsequent rounds to be held the following two weekends at the Dubai Autodrome with different track layouts. It wouldn't be hard to imagine future calendars expanding to include rounds on the grand prix circuit in Bahrain, the Losail circuit in Qatar, or even Istanbul Park in Turkey.

In the meantime, the short series taking place in the winter months will allow drivers from the other regional championships to get up to speed in the Emirates before returning home.

As with the existing championships, the series will revolve exclusively around the Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo. The racer is based on the road-going supercar but with more power and track-focused equipment. Each of the two-driver teams will be classified by skill level and experience.

Though no mention was made, the winners of the Middle Eastern series will presumably be eligible as well to compete for top honors in the Super Trofeo World Final event, held last year at Sebring in Florida, the year before at Sepang in Malaysia, and before that at Vallelunga in Italy.
