Volkswagen's Electric Range To Take Shape In Coming Two Years

#Volkswagen is set to introduce a host of new concept cars in the coming two years to further #preview the design language of its future fleet of electric vehicles.

At last week's Paris Auto Show, the German automaker lifted the veil on the I.D. Concept, its first electric model that will hit the market by 2020. Alongside its unique powertrain, it showcased the design language Volkswagen will employ throughout electric range.

According to Volkswagen Group board member Jurgen Stackman, “I think in the next series of international motor shows you’ll see where we’re heading, more of the family thought.”

Speaking with Car Advice, Stackman said that SUV and crossover models are bound to join the I.D. hatchback.

“We’re going to expand our SUV range widely, as this type of vehicle will be the dominating vehicle type...The shape of an SUV probably will play a certain role [in the EV family]. It seems to be the number-one wanted shape, so ignoring that would not be a wise decision.”

It's not yet known what will power these SUV and crossover models but a modular powertrain similar to the I.D. is possible. That would mean customers could opt for how many electric motors they want as well as what sized battery pack fits their needs.
