New Defender To Be Land Rover's Most High-Tech Model Ever

The next-generation Land Rover Defender is set to become the brand's most high-tech model ever when it arrives in 2019.

Autocar reports that the British firm wants the new Defender to be the world's most capable off-roader, and to do so, will outfit it with a host of technologies even more advanced than those of the new Discovery.

To ensure the vehicle is as capable off road as possible, the engine will be longitudinally mounted up front and be accompanied by a separate transfer case. Additionally, the new Defender will have the same underpinnings as current Range Rovers and be offered with the same wheelbase. However, it will be more compact thanks to shorter overhangs, ensuring it is just as maneuverable as ever.

Although the model's launch is still some time away, prototypes have already commenced testing around the world. Much of the new Defender's design has been signed off and confirmation has been given that it will use aluminum extensively in its construction.

Although the brand has air suspension systems in its arsenal, the new Defender is predicted to stick with traditional steel springs and an indepedent setup. In terms of powertrains, Jaguar Land Rover's Ingenium petrol and diesel engines are expected as are both manual and automatic transmissions.
