Next-Gen Mercedes-Benz SL To Be Based On AMG GT Platform

Fresh reports claim that the next-generation #Mercedes-Benz SL will share its underpinnings with the #AMG GT in an attempt to increase the sporty prowess of the brand's most famous convertible.

Interestingly, Autocar reports that Mercedes-Benz's performance division, AMG, has been given the reigns for the engineering development of the new SL and has been working on the model alongside the recently-revealed GT Roadster.

By adopting the GT's underpinnings, the new SL will combine a rear-mounted transaxle with a longitudinally mounted engine up front, optimized for the best possible weight distribution. Additionally, the SL will adopt the GT's double wishbone suspension setup and could receive the German firm's optional Air Body Control system.

The similarities between the duo won't end there. Like the GT, the new SL will adopt lightweight aluminum body panels and the carbon fiber torque tube from its more agile and sportier sibling.

In terms of engines, the model will be available with the company's new M256 inline six-cylinder engine joined by a small 15 kW electric motor and incorporating an electrically driven turbocharger, making for a total of 402 hp in standard tune.

A new AMG variant will also be added to the range with roughly 450 hp on tap. The family will then continue to be topped off with the SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG, the first of which will use the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the new E63.
