Multiple 5-Series Sedan Versions To Highlight BMW's NAIAS Stand

#BMW will debut their all-new 5-Series saloon in Detroit come January, alongside its M #Performance & #iPerformance Plug-In Hybrid variants.

By launching the 530e iPerformance, BMW will now offer a full family of PHEVs, which includes the 330e iPerformance, the 740e xDrive iPerformance, the X5 xDrive40e iPerformance, plus of course the i3 and i8 models.

The three 5-Series versions will be joined at the BMW stand at COBO Center by the X2 Concept, a compact sports Activity Vehicle that made its debut at this year's Paris Motor Show and will now be making its official North American debut.

Still, aside from any of the previously mentioned models, it's the new 5er that will undoubtedly be the star of BMW's NAIAS stand, a car that was developed to be up to 137 lbs (62 kg) lighter than its predecessor for increased performance and fuel efficiency ratings. BMW has sold more than 1 million 5-Series units in the US alone since 1975, and now, in its 7th generation, the 5er will again look to establish itself as a segment-leader in North America.

The 540i xDrive comes with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine, yielding 335 HP (35 HP more than its predecessor), 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque, sprinting to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.7 seconds. The quicker M550i xDrive on the other hand packs 456 HP, 480 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque and can hit the same 60 mph marker in 4 seconds flat.

As for the 530e iPerformance, it combines BMW's eDrive electric drive concept and a 4-cylinder petrol unit to pump out 248 HP, 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque, sprinting to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. It can also drive in full-electric mode for up to 15 miles (24 km).

The all-new BMW 5-Series will hit US showrooms in February, with the 530e iPerformance and the M550i xDrive to be available come spring 2017.
