SRT Viper GTS-R racer

This year will see the return of a works-backed Viper to the American Le Mans Series.

Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show alongside the new street-legal SRT Viper, the GTS-R race car is set to compete in the production-based GT class where its rivals will include the Corvette C6.R, BMW M3 GT and Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

The team will consist of two cars, which SRT Motorsports is developing in collaboration with Riley Technologies. A mid-season race debut is scheduled for sometime during the summer, with Dominik Farnbacher (Germany), Marc Goossens (Belgium), Ryan Hunter-Reay (United States) and Kuno Wittmer (Canada) sharing the driving duties.

Commenting on campaign, Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology brand, said: “Racing has been a significant part of the illustrious history of Viper not only with wins on the track, but also in the continued development of the street cars - and our new 2013 SRT Viper models are proof of those lessons learned.

“Now with our new team and the launch of the GTS-R, we’re excited and proud to begin writing more chapters in the racing history of the Viper later this summer.”

In addition to the ALMS activities, the Dodge Viper Cup Series continues into its third year, still using the limited-edition 2010 Viper ACR-X. However, in recognition of the Viper now being an SRT brand product, the championship has been renamed the SRT Viper Cup Series.
