Honda Micro Commuter EV

Honda has revealed the Micro Commuter Prototype, a diminutive electric vehicle that could provide some direct competition for the Renault Twizy.

Based around an under-floor lithium-ion battery pack and 20 bhp (15 kW / 20 PS) motor, the anticipated top speed is a fairly respectable 50 mph (80 km/h). However, an expected range of around 40 miles (60 kilometres) and a three-hour recharge time will probably restrict its use to short urban journeys only.

The cabin is designed to carry two adults in tandem or, with a different rear seat unit, one adult and two children. Control of the audio and navigation systems and display of various vehicle functions is via a removable tablet device, which is itself recharged via roof-mounted solar cells.

Engineered in response to a Japanese government initiative for mobility products, the Micro Commuter would also comply with European L7 regulations making it, like the Twizy, a quadricycle rather than a car.

Testing of the Micro Commuter Prototype is due to begin in Japan next year, but Honda has yet to announce any firm production plans.
