Return of the Yamaha SR400

Yamaha first launched its SR series of single-cylinder motorcycles thirty-five years ago. They haven’t been available in Europe for a while, but that situation is about to change with the reintroduction of the SR400.

A teardrop tank, chrome mudguards and wire-spoke wheels all mean the latest version keeps the look of its predecessors. Other original features have survived intact too, including the tubular steel cradle frame, rear drum brake and twin rear suspension units.

Likewise, the engine is still an air-cooled, 399 cc, four-stroke, two-valve motor. However, a need to comply with emissions regulations has forced Yamaha to replace the old carburettor with a fuel injection system, resulting in an output of 22 bhp (17 kW / 23 PS) with 24 Nm (18 lb/ft) of peak torque. Despite that innovation, a kick-starter remains.

The 2014 Yamaha SR400 is being offered in a choice of black or matt grey paintwork. A UK price has yet to be confirmed.
