Special edition Lancer Evolution X coming

Mitsubishi is bringing the Lancer Evolution X back to the UK, albeit in extremely limited numbers. Indeed, just 40 examples of the new FQ-440 MR special edition are going to be built.

Nevertheless that’s a fitting volume because the car marks the 40th anniversary of Mitsubishi’s subsidiary here. Offered only in a Frost White paint finish, the celebratory FQ-440 MR comes with a selection of upgrades.

As the name implies, power from the engine has been increased to 440 bhp (328 kW / 446 PS) and it achieves a peak torque figure of 558 Nm (412 lb/ft). That higher output has been mainly realised by an ECU remap and high-flow fuel injectors, although an exhaust system, manifold and piping kit from Janspeed help too.

Completing the powertrain are a six-speed twin-clutch Sports Shift Transmission and the Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) full-time four-wheel drive system. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi hasn’t released any performance or economy stats yet.

Among the chassis components are Eibach coil springs that lower the front and rear suspension by 35 and 30 mm (1.4 and 1.2”) respectively. Stopping meanwhile is taken care of by an Alcon braking set-up that features floating discs all-round and six-piston calipers for the front wheels.

Also included on the special edition’s standard spec sheet are 18” BBS forged alloys, leather-trimmed Recaro front seats, Bluetooth, climate control, touchscreen-controlled satellite navigation and bi-xenon headlights.

However, there are three important things that might put off anybody considering the special edition FQ-440 MR.

First is the rather steep price tag of £50,000. And then there’s the servicing which, after an initial oil change at 1,000 miles, has ridiculously short intervals of 4,500 miles or six months.

But perhaps most disconcerting is the onboard data recorder that is going to be fitted. As well as tracking the vehicle diagnostics, it also logs the car’s location, driving style and the level of performance used. Sinisterly, all of that information will be available to Mitsubishi and removing or disabling the device invalidates the Lancer’s three-year warranty.
