Volkswagen XL1 UK price confirmed

There can be no disputing the Volkswagen XL1’s outstanding fuel economy, but its price tag is astonishing.

The XL1 features a hybrid powertrain that consists of a 47 bhp (35 kW / 48 PS) two-cylinder 800 cc diesel engine, a 27 bhp (20 kW / 27 PS) electric motor and a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

Combined with a 0.189 drag coefficient and a weight of 795 kg (1,752 lbs), the result is 313 mpg (0.9 l/100km) on the combined cycle with negligible carbon dioxide emissions of 21 g/km. What’s more, a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack allows for an electric-only range of 31 miles (50 kilometres).

However, Volkswagen has just revealed that in the UK the XL1 is to cost £98,515.

To put things into perspective, a similar amount would buy five electric-powered e-Up! city cars, or eight Polo S hatchbacks, or two Phaeton V6 saloons.

On that basis, the XL1 is probably going to appeal to those people with plenty of spare cash who want to make some kind of misguided eco statement. Volkswagen’s decision to limit XL1 production to around 200 examples seems to be a wise one.
