2016 Chevrolet Malibu revealed

The ninth-generation Malibu ticks some very important boxes. For instance, it’s larger, lighter and more efficient than before thanks mainly to the use of an all-new platform architecture.

A 91 mm (3.6”) wheelbase stretch translates into extra interior space, with rear-seat passengers in particular benefiting from increased leg room. Furthermore, despite being 58 mm (2.3”) longer overall, the 2016 model weighs around 136 kg (300 lbs) less than its predecessor.

Chevrolet has also adopted a modern approach for the powertrains. As standard, the mid-size Malibu features a four-cylinder 1.5 litre Ecotec engine. Paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, this turbocharged unit is estimated to produce 160 bhp (119 kW / 162 PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb/ft) of peak torque.

If that output isn’t sufficient, there are two alternatives. The first is a 2.0 litre turbocharged option that sends its 250 bhp (186 kW / 253 PS) and 350 Nm (258 lb/ft) to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Second is a hybrid set-up that borrows a lot of technology from the Volt. The system comprises a 1.8 litre petrol engine, a two-motor electric drive unit, an 80-cell 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and regenerative braking. Rated at 182 bhp (136 kW / 184 PS) overall, Chevrolet says it can deliver a combined 47 mpg US (56.4 mpg imperial / 5.0 l/100km).

As well as the standalone Hybrid variant, 2016 Malibu buyers will have a choice of four trim grades. Sales are scheduled to begin in North America during the fourth quarter of 2015.
