Seat updates the Ibiza Cupra for 2016

While the 2016 Ibiza Cupra looks virtually identical to its predecessor, there have been some major changes.

They start beneath the bonnet, where a 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine replaces the old 1.4 litre unit. So what’s the effect of that extra displacement?

Well, power is increased from 176 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS) to 189 bhp (141 kW / 192 PS). Arguably more important for mid-range pace is peak torque, which is up by 70 Nm (51 lb/ft) to 320 Nm (236 lb/ft) - a huge 28% rise.

The usual performance benchmarks aren’t much improved, though. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time drops from 6.9 to 6.7 seconds, while top speed climbs slightly from 142 mph (228 km/h) to 146 mph (235 km/h).

Coincidentally, the Volkswagen Polo GTI achieves identical figures. Doubtless an intra-group pecking order means that the Seat can’t be any quicker than its rival from the parent brand…

Other upgrades for the Ibiza Cupra include the introduction of a driving mode selector. Called ‘Cupra Drive Profile’, this allows various elements such as the steering and adaptive suspension to be altered.

Completing the enhancements is a revamped interior. From the driver’s perspective the steering wheel, instrumentation and some dashboard fittings are new. Furthermore, the available infotainment systems now support Apple Car Play and Android Auto for better smartphone integration.
