Volvo will supply Uber with autonomous cars

Becoming an Uber driver might not be a wise long-term job move. That's because Volvo has announced a deal with the app-based taxi service to provide autonomous vehicles.

Both companies are putting a combined US$300M (around £230M / €265M) into the project. It'll see a new model being developed on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture, which already underpins the current S90, V90 and XC90.

Cars destined for Uber use are going to differ slightly, as the firm is in the process of creating bespoke driverless systems.

This alliance is yet another indication that the motor and technology industries are converging. Furthermore, it could influence changing attitudes to car ownership (and the need to hold a driving licence), especially in densely-populated urban areas.
