Next Rotary-Powered Mazda Could Do Without Electrification

Even though #Mazda’s rotary engines are notorious for gulping down fuel, the company says its next rotary-powered sports car could shun electrification entirely.

During the Los Angeles Auto Show 2016, Mazda R&D boss Kiyoshi Fujiwara confirmed to Auto Express that a dedicated team is still developing a new rotary engine and looking for innovative ways to tackle technical and fuel efficiency challenges now facing all new vehicles.

Fujiwara did say that, ultimately, rotary engines could adopt electrification, but for now it would be favorable to launch the new model without it.

“All of our other internal combustion engines will have to have some form of electrification at some point - mild hybrid or 48-volt electrics. So yes, that type of technology could be in rotary engines in the future. However, I believe I would like to introduce the new rotary engine without electrification because I think that is what the rotary engine fans will want,” he confirmed.

It appears Mazda doesn't want to rush the launch of the so-called RX-9, so it takes its time to decide what form will suit it best.
