Next-Gen Jaguar F-Type Could Be Mid-Engined

According to #Jaguar design director Ian Callum, the British brand is open to making the next-generation F-Type mid-engined.

During a comprehensive interview with Road & Track during the Los Angeles Auto Show, Callum revealed that the company has had discussions about adopting a mid-engine layout and that it would be fitting for a sports car company like Jaguar.

“I think we've got more permission to break the mold. Our F-Type, before the one that became the production car, the previous design concept was mid-engine. It never happened. It would have been very different. But I think we've got permission to do that, because we're a sports car company,” he said.

“I don't feel tied by it. We've had a discussion — will the next F-Type be mid-engine or front-engine? We've had that discussion. We haven't decided yet. And even within the design studio we disagree with each other. So the next F-Type won't necessarily have a long hood and a short trunk.”

If the next F-Type did indeed become mid-engined, it could place it amongst a different breed of performance cars, including the Lamborghini Huracan, Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 650S.

If Jaguar does indeed go down this route, an uprated powertrain would be inevitable with power likely sitting in excess of 600 hp.
