Toyota Breaks Ground On $1 Billion Mexican Factory

#Toyota has just celebrated the ground breaking of its second Mexican manufacturing plant, located in Apaseo el Grande and dubbed Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Guanajuato (TMMGT).

When completed, the plant will be the company’s 15th in North America and produce the Corolla from 2019 onwards. Toyota says the de Guanajuato factory, costing $1 billion to build and tool, will employ approximately 2,000 people and build 200,000 Corollas annually.

According to Mike Bafan, TMMGT president, “TMMGT will afford us the opportunity to boost vehicle quality and appeal while achieving cost savings through production engineering innovations. This plant will also be simple, sustainable, mindful of its environment and highly competitive.

“Ultimately, this means our customers will benefit from our cars being produced locally with the highest quality and environmental standards,” Bafan said.

Once production at TMMGT reaches capacity, the Japanese brand will be producing approximately 2.2 million vehicles annually in North America.
